Columbia Resilience

Book Club — Surviving the Future by David Fleming

Columbia Resilience Book Club will meet Thursday, January 10.  We will meet 7-9 pm in the office of Sustainable Midlands.  The office is located in the Heyward St. United Methodist Church (2501 Heyward Street, 29205).

The book is divided into three parts and the plan would be to discuss one part at each of the first three meetings, with one meeting afterwards (or two if necessary) to tie up loose ends and think about ramifications/next steps.

January 10 we read the Foreword, Editor’s Preface, Introduction and The Story, and then Chapters 1-3
which make up Part 1.  In addition, Appendix: Survival Tool 1 is a review of logical fallacies
which is useful to have read before we start our discussions.

January 17 we will discuss Part 2, Chapters 4-11

January 24 Part 3, Chapters 12-16.
Depending upon how things develop, we can add Appendix: Survival Tool 2 to the discussion of
the 24th, or save it for the 31st.

A bit about the book, Surviving the Future: “The subtitle—Culture, Carnival and Capital in the Aftermath of the Market Economy—hints at Fleming’s vision. He believed that the market economy will not survive its inherent flaws beyond the early decades of this century, and that its failure will bring great challenges, but he did not dwell on this: “We know what we need to do. We need to build the sequel, to draw on inspiration which has lain dormant, like the seed beneath the snow.””
